Summer Sendoff
Winter is coming

The bittersweet fact of life is that seasons and people come and go, as do corn, stone fruits, and tomatoes. These are the rock upon which summer’s best meals are built.
Luckily, we have a few more glorious opportunities to enjoy them before the sun starts setting at 5 and our friends start migrating to New York. But like our favorite summer crops, our favorite people will be back. So let’s end the season with a bang:
🌽 Cotogna / cotognasf.com

Corn triangoli // image credit: me
Although you’ll pay an arm and a leg for it, the corn triangoli pasta at Cotogna wraps you in a sweet, velvety hug that you’ll miss just as much as summer (and your friends) when it’s gone.
Whether you’re grabbing a seat in one of SF’s best parklets for a late afternoon lunch or tucking into an entirely over the top date night, Cotogna never fails to deliver.

🍑 State Bird Provisions / statebirdsf.com

The state bird // image credit: me
The peach and pork belly salad is at State Bird Provisions is as much a salad as I am a cantaloupe, but rules don’t apply at the coolest dinner party in town. The hustle and bustle of the open kitchen is a fitting backdrop for the swell of small plates that start flying at you as soon as you sit down.
The smart bet here is to try not to fill up on carbs while you’re waiting for the main event, but given every plate is looks better than the last, that’s easier said than done.

🍅 Your Farmer’s Market / sfenvironment.org/farmers-markets-in-sf

Killer caprese // image credit: me
While there’s a million restaurants in the city that can dress up a tomato, your best bet is going to be strolling over to your local farmers market to pick out an enormous heirloom tomato that almost feels overripe but isn’t. From there, the world is your oyster.
Throw a couple slices on a bagel from House of Bagels or The Laundromat with cream cheese, layer them with fresh mozzarella, basil, and olive oil for a killer caprese, or add them to a slice of toast with a smear or hummus.
