Pumpkin Spice Vibes

Let your fall flag fly

It’s no secret that ~fall~ in SF isn’t really a thing. October is easily the hottest month of the year and the near-omnipresent fog usually dissipates by the time we roll out of bed.

So while the rest of the country stockpiles for winter, we need spots that feel cozy and autumnal with some optionality if it’s hot and sweaty outside. Dig in:

🍶 Sushi An / sushiansf.com

Sushi An is a glittering jewel hiding in the Japantown Mall. Upbeat conversation flows with excellent sake while some of the best sushi in SF is served by hand, accompanied by a quick story of the fish’s origin.

As the meal wraps up you’ll probably indulge in an extra piece of whatever your favorite was, desperately clinging to another few minutes behind the blond wooden sushi bar. Take a minute to debrief back in the real world and you’ll start plotting your next visit.

NOTE: I’m hesitant to recommend an omakase spot but this place smashes the value to quality ratio and is easily one of my favorite meals of the year

🍷 Che Fico / chefico.com

Climbing the stairs into Che Fico is the equivalent of going to your rich friend’s dinner party in their Lower Haight apartment, the warmth in the farmhouse-esque open kitchen wrapping you up like a big turtleneck sweater.

The bigger the group you bring, the better. The menu doesn’t have any discernible weaknesses and the friendly service will make sure you’re deep in perfect pasta and their extensive wine list until you’ve almost overstayed your welcome.

🍸️ The Interval at Long Now / theinterval.org

Doesn’t it just look like fall? // image credit: Long Now Foundation

A laid back, creative cocktail list make The Interval an ideal place to settle in for a drink while the sun sets at 6pm, while the shiny oddities that adorn the library slash bar slash coffee shop will help take your mind off the fact that the sun is setting at 6pm.

If drinks turn into dinner you can slide into a schnitzel at Radhaus or go the vegetarian route at Greens.
