Hacking Uber Eats
Feel a little less shame about that takeout habit
I’m taking a break from our regularly scheduled programming to highlight a huge opportunity to save money and combine two of my favorite things: food and credit card rewards. If you like free money and want to get right to it, you can skip to the bottom.
All of the big delivery services (Uber Eats, Grubhub, Doordash) offer a monthly subscription that have some combination of reduced delivery fees and discounts.
Uber One is particularly compelling for a few reasons:
$0 delivery fees on all Uber Eats orders
5-10% off all Uber Eats order and Uber rides
$5 Uber cash when their arrival estimate is wrong
All in all, the membership costs $9.99/mo and I save anywhere from $5-20/mo.
Uber’s history in the financial services game is interesting - they had a branded credit card through Barclays that I had (and liked) for a while before they shut it down. They partner with Amex to give Platinum cardholders $15 Uber cash each month. But the best thing they’ve done so far is their partnership with Capital One’s Savor card, which works like this:
Monthly reimbursement for Uber One membership ($9.99/mo value + savings from Uber One)
10% cashback on Uber purchases (I actually didn’t believe this could possibly be true, but it is. $15 Uber ride = $1.50 back)
4% back on all non-Uber restaurant purchases (which puts the card in line with the Amex Gold) plus entertainment and streaming services
3% back on groceries
Overall, the Savor card is a no-brainer if you don’t yet have a restaurant rewards card like Amex Gold. Whatever your savings from Uber One are, that’s money right back to your bottom line, along with the 10% back on Uber purchases.
Put in real terms: I spent over $4,000 on Uber (rides and food) last year. Assuming a 5% savings rate through Uber One, plus Capital One’s 10% back, that’s over $600 in savings and cash back. Couple that with the $300 welcome bonus you get from Capital One, and it’s basically financially irresponsible not to have this card.
Want to get in on the action? Here’s how ⬇️
Apply for the Savor card here
Link your Uber Eats account by signing up for Uber One and using your Savor card to pay for a monthly subscription. If by some miracle you’ve survived this long without an account, use my code for $20 off your first $25+ order: eats-9mixf
Heads up that this promotion is only active until November 2023, so get it while the getting’s good.
If you’ve stuck with me so far you’re a real one - so here’s my quick list of best takeout spots:
🇮🇳 Viva Goa - hands down the best Indian takeout in the city
🇨🇳 R&G Lounge - I’d been ordering delivery for years before I ate at the restaurant
🇮🇹 Italian Homemade Company - pasta, sauce, maybe a little burrata salad, capiche?
